Sit in it to fly, and right-click it to talk to the ship's computer. While she's wrecked it's your repair checklist; once she flies it shows how the ship is doing, where you've been and where you could go.
There's no recipe for one. Your wreck's nose never breaks, and crashed ships sometimes have a spare.
